LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT

70TH ANNIVERSARY NORTHERN TOUR

First performed at Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham on May 12th 2026

“The past is the present, isn’t it? It’s the future too. We all try to lie our way out of that but life won’t let us.”

Summer 1912: the Tyrones gather in the family home on the coast of New England. After years of separation they are reunited again, full of hope for the future. But as day passes into night their love will be tested to the utmost as the ghosts of the past come to haunt them and they all are drawn back into a past they hoped to escape.

Usually the preserve of London and Broadway, Elysium brought O’Neill’s autobiographical masterpiece to the North, including Northern Stage in Newcastle, the Gala Durham, the Dukes Lancaster as well as venues in Barnard Castle, Hartlepool, Manchester, Richmond, Sunderland, Washington and York. In many places the play was performed for the first time in history.
